Becoming A Leader

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

The success of a business is often dependent on its leaders. You might have heard that “excellent leaders are made not born”. What are the qualities of that leader?

  • Gets the job done by combining past experiences, proven strategies and continuous improvement on “hard” and “soft” skills.
  • Assesses a situation quickly using logic and intuition
  • Has a vision (includes values, the company’s mission/purpose/goals)
  • Excellent Understanding
  • Courage
  • Risk-taker
  • Patient
  • Has excellent crisis management skills
  • Integrity (do what they say they would do, face reality, admit their lesser strengths, are reliable and consistent).

How many of these areas describe you? Are there some you want to work on? Which ones are you ready to take on? You can become a great leader.

Stop the world, I want to get off!

Do you feel life is a whirlwind at times? Do you ask such questions as, “Why can’t it be easier?” Do we appear to sabotage our success? By taking Six Advisors Assessments (through me at a reduced price), you can see what is making you struggle. Your thoughts drive you to success or failure. If you prefer to think about it on your own, what do you come up with?

  • My parents reinforced that assumption.
  • Our employers wanted to hold us down.
  • People tell us not to get your hopes too high.

Know often it is you that causes the struggle. You can be your own worst enemy. What can you put into place to reduce the struggle?

  • Lighten up - Og Mandino in his book, “The Greatest Salesman in the World” tells us to “laugh at the world”…lighten up, know “this too shall pass”.
  • Be aware when the time is right – sometimes an idea won’t be entertained simply because the time is not right. Be patient.
  • Trust – don’t be attached to the outcome. Do what you can and let it go.
  • Be willing to change – change is not easy, but often worth it. As they say, keep doing what you are doing, keep getting what you are getting.
  • Be in control of your life rather than giving this over to another.

Know in most cases life doesn’t have to be a struggle. Just one woman’s opinion.
